How to Count Window Panes for an Accurate Window Cleaning Estimate
One of the first questions we ask when preparing a window cleaning estimate is: How many window panes do you have?
That sounds simple, but pane counting can get confusing quickly — especially if your home has double-hung windows, sliders, French panes, decorative grids, patio doors, or several different window styles.

What Is a Window Pane?
A window pane is an individual section of glass that needs to be cleaned.
- A single picture window is typically 1 pane.
- A window with two sliding glass sections is typically 2 panes.
- A standard double-hung window with an upper and lower glass section is typically 2 panes.
- A two-panel sliding patio door is typically 2 panes.
The part that causes the most confusion is decorative window grids. Depending on how those grids are constructed, a window that appears to have 6, 9, or 12 sections may count as either one pane or many individual panes.
The Most Important Question: Are the Window Grids Inside or Outside the Glass?
Many windows have decorative grids, sometimes referred to as grilles or muntins, that create the appearance of several smaller pieces of glass.
For window cleaning purposes, the important distinction is whether those grids are sealed between the glass or whether they protrude through the frame and physically separate the glass into individual sections.
This difference can significantly change the pane count — and therefore the amount of detail work required to properly clean the window.
Grids Between the Glass: Count the Continuous Glass as One Pane
Many newer windows have decorative grids sealed between two layers of glass. From the outside, the window may look like it contains several smaller sections, but the cleaning surface itself is completely smooth.
If you can run your hand across the glass without feeling the grid, you are usually looking at a between-the-glass grid.
In this situation, do not count each decorative square individually. Count the continuous section of glass as one pane.
For example, a large window may visually appear to contain nine squares. If those grids are sealed between the glass and the exterior surface is uninterrupted, the entire continuous glass section may still count as just one pane.
The reason is simple: our technician can clean across the entire surface of the glass without having to work around individual grid pieces.
French Pane Windows: Count Each Individual Section of Glass
Traditional French-pane windows are different.
If the grids protrude through the window frame or sit on the surface of the glass, they physically divide the window into individual sections that must each be cleaned separately.
In this case, each individual section of glass counts as one pane.
For example, if a French-style window has:
2 sections across × 3 sections down = 6 panes
That window should be counted as 6 panes, not one.
This distinction matters because cleaning 6 individual French panes requires considerably more detailed work than cleaning one uninterrupted piece of glass with decorative grids sealed between the panes.
An Easy Way to Tell Which Type of Window You Have
If you’re unsure how your window should be counted, gently run your fingers across the glass.
- Smooth glass with the grid visible underneath: The grid is most likely between the glass. Count each continuous glass section as one pane.
- Raised grid that you can physically feel: The grid is on the surface or protrudes through the frame. Count each individual section of glass separately.
You can also look closely at where the grid meets the window frame. A true French-pane configuration physically divides the glass into smaller cleaning areas, while an internal decorative grid simply creates the appearance of separate panes.
How to Count Common Window Styles
Here are a few common examples that can help when counting the windows around your home:
- Picture window: 1 pane
- Oval or specialty-shaped window: 1 pane
- Two-lite slider: 2 panes
- Double-hung window: 2 panes
- Two-panel sliding patio door: 2 panes
- Three-section bay window: typically 3-6 panes
- Six-section French window: 6 panes
- Twelve-section French window: 12 panes
- Decorative grids sealed between the glass: count each continuous glass section rather than each decorative square
Window designs vary considerably from home to home, so these are general examples rather than universal rules.
Why Pane Count Matters for Window Cleaning Pricing
Two homes can have the same number of windows but require very different amounts of work.
For example, a home with 20 large uninterrupted panes may be much faster to clean than a home with 20 French-style windows containing several individual panes each.
That’s why we look at the actual pane configuration rather than simply asking how many windows are in the house.
